Scotland stretched their unbeaten run with a comprehensive win by 8 wickets against Oman in Round 1 of the T20 World Cup to qualify for the Super 12s in Al Amerat on Thursday.

Scotland chased down the below-par target of 123 in 17 overs to knock out hosts Oman, top Group B and enter the main draw of a World Cup (ODI or T20I) for the first time in the nation’s cricketing history.

Oman needed to win by at least 79 runs to progress to the main tournament but failed to stop the likes of Kyle Coetzer, Matthew Cross and Richie Berrington from overhauling the target with 18 balls to spare.

Oman vs Scotland, T20 World Cup: Highlights

Captain Coetzer top-scored with 41 before the unbroken 48-run third-wicket partnership between Cross and Berrington took the Scottish home. Cross remained not out on 26 while Berrington finished the match with a six to finish on 31 not out.

Earlier, Scotland dished out a clinical bowling effort to bundle out Oman for a below-par 122 in 20 overs their final T20 World Cup first round Group B match.

Oman lost two quick wickets — Jatinder Singh and Kashyap Prajapati — after opting to bat before Aqib Ilyas (37 off 35 balls) and Mohammad Nadeem (25 off 21) stabilised the innings with a 38-run third-wicket stand.

But Scotland pulled things back, removing both Ilyas and Nadeem, who perished in search of one too many just after clobbering Mark Watt over the boundary. Sandeep Goud (5) and Naseem Khushi didn’t help their side’s cause either as Oman kept losing wickets at regular intervals to reach 98 for six after 16 overs.

Skipper Zeeshan Maqsood (34 off 30) tried his best to push the scoring rate but Scotland bowlers didn’t give Oman batters any leeway. Josh Davey (3/25), Michael Leask (2/12), Safyaan Sharif (2/25) and Mark Watt (1/23) were the wicket takers for Scotland.
